In the ‘90s when 640x480 was high resolution and Excel was a resource-intensive application flat design would have made sense, but now when most devices we interact with are higher resolution than our retinas are capable of resolving and the term “supercomputer” feels like an understatement it just feels like such a missed opportunity. Now that there was enough resolution and computing power to render naturalistic textures and shading companies suddenly said “nah, just make it all a blue gradient”. It’s the same complaint I’ve had about flat design, it just feels like such a waste that it took off right when ultra-high pixel density and IPS/OLED became commonplace.

It feels like it’s time to move on, modern devices are perfectly capable of rendering complex logos and fonts that aren’t Avenir. I think the lowest pixel density device I regularly interact with is the Nintendo Switch and even that’s 209 ppi, the cheap entry level smartphones you get from Boost Mobile can be 300-400ppi these days. I see this brought up all the time but it’s 2022, when was the last time you saw a low-pixel-density display? iPhones have had Retina displays for eleven years, the first 1080p Android phablets are almost a decade old, even smartwatches have super sharp screens. yet the trend is clearly in the other direction. I think this will shift soon.Įdit: yes a lot of fashion has switched over as well, but there’s a few holdouts like gucci, prada and armani.

When everyone realizes how superficial this trend is, the next one will be to go towards seriffed sophisticated brand design which is occupied today primarily by luxury fashion houses. Ditto for the bright colors and minimal logo designs. The general idea is that the primitive shapes of the letter forms (the o’s and c’s look like simple circles, the m’s look like squares and the v’s and capital a’s look like triangles) are supposed to be evocative of a friendly approachable brand. This is all part of the unspoken SaaS (software as a service) playbook. These are all geometric sans fonts like Avenir or Gotham (whereas Helvetica is a neo grotesque.) Poppins and Montserrat are great free google fonts that have this same feel.
